Eid al-Adha (Islamic)

Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the two major Islamic holidays celebrated by Muslims worldwide, including in the United States. It commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to God, a story also shared in Judeo-Christian traditions.

The holiday takes place during the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah on the 10th, following the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. It involves a special prayer service and the ritual sacrifice of an animal, usually a sheep, goat, or cow. The meat is distributed among family, friends, and those in need.

In the USA, Eid al-Adha has been celebrated since the arrival of Muslim immigrants in the 19th and 20th centuries. It gained greater visibility in the late 20th century as Muslim communities established mosques and Islamic centers across the country.

Today, Muslims in the USA observe Eid al-Adha with prayers in mosques or large outdoor spaces, community gatherings, charitable giving, and family celebrations. Many also take time off from work or school to participate in the festivities. The holiday fosters a strong sense of faith, gratitude, and social responsibility.
